Florida ID Cards
In Florida, ID cards are issued by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) Division of Driver Licenses office. An ID card proves your age, identity, or residence in many everyday activities.

Florida REAL ID Cards
The Florida DHSMV began issuing federally-compliant REAL ID driver’s licenses in 2010. REAL IDs allow you to use your license for domestic travel and entry into federal and military buildings. For details on FL REAL IDs, see the DHSMV's guide and FAQs.
You With Id A Can Fly Florida ID Card Eligibility Requirements
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) offers REAL ID-compliant identification cards to residents who are 5 years old or older.
There are a few other requirements to apply for an ID card in Florida. You must:
- Cancel any out-of-state license.
- NOT already hold a FL driver's license.
NOTE: You cannot simultaneously hold a Florida driver's license and an identification card.
Applying for a Florida ID Card
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) requires you to apply for your Florida ID card in person at a Division of Driver Licenses.

The DHSMV encourages you to make an appointment online before your office visit—that way, you don't have to wait in a stand-by line!
- Proof of identity (1 document).
- For non-U.S. citizens, please see “Non-U.S. Citizen FL ID Requirements" below.
- Social Security card.
- If you do not have a Social Security number, the DHSMV requires that you bring a letter from the Social Security Administration indicating you were never issued one, plus an acceptable document proving your identity.
- Proof of FL residency (2 documents).
- Payment for the $25 FL ID card fee.

Non-U.S. Citizen FL ID Requirements
You must provide 1 document (original or certified copy) to establish your identity, in addition to all other documents listed above for U.S. citizens. However, your identity document may be different, as you will not be able to provide a U.S. birth certificate or passport.
A few examples of acceptable documents for non-U.S. citizens include:
- A valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card—I-551 for Lawful Permanent Residents.
- A valid passport for non-immigrants (excluding asylum applicants and refugees).
- Department of Homeland Security document (showing proof of lawful presence).
Florida ID Card Fees
The costs for an identification card in Florida are as follows:

- Original ID card: $25.
- Renewal: $25.
- Late fee for expired license: $15.
- Duplicate ID card: $25.
- Address change: $25.
- Tax Collector office additional service fee: $6.25.
Renew Your Florida ID Card
You may renew your Florida ID card online or in person at a Division of Driver Licenses officeTo Get Your Tips License. Customers currently without REAL ID-compliant ID cards must renew in person and get their upgraded credentials.
Replace Your Florida ID Card
You may be eligible to replace your Florida ID card online or in person at any driver license office. If you don't currently have a REAL ID card, you'll need to replace your ID in person.
IMPORTANT: Non-REAL ID Cards
If you DO NOT currently hold a REAL ID-compliant card, you'll need to replace your ID in person.
If your ID was stolen, the replacement fee will be waived if you provide a copy of a police report. The fee to replace your FL ID is $25. You will pay an additional $2 convenience fee if you replace your ID online.

To replace your ID card online, visit the GoRenew website and provide:
- Primary identification.
- This is usually your FL ID number; if you have lost it or do not know what it is, you must replace your ID in person.
- Date of birth.
- Last 4 digits of your Social Security number.
The Division of Driver Licenses office will ask to see proof of your identity, Social Security number, and residential address. You will have to pay a replacement fee of $25.

Changing Your FL ID Card Information
Need to change your address or name displayed on your Florida identification card? Choose your scenario below to find out the steps to follow.
Out-of-State or Military ID Cards in FL
Florida military members, whether residents of FL or not, may use the steps listed above to apply for a Florida ID card.
If you're temporarily out of state and your Florida ID card is due to expire, you may renew online if your last renewal was completed in person. Please note that your identification card will be sent to the address on file with the DHSMV.

U.S. Military Veteran: Special Designation
Veterans living in Florida may add a veteran designation to their Florida state ID cards. A “V" notation will display on the right side of the card.
To add the “V" to a Florida ID card, veterans can:
- Visit any Division of Driver Licenses office.
- Present a DD-214, showing an honorable discharge from active duty.
- Pay a one-time $1 fee, in addition to the $25 replacement or renewal identification card fee.
